Research Interests
Tony Warnes has pursued research in the social demography of later life and older people's residential choices since the 1970s. His interests in gerontology range from the humanities to the potential of genomic medicine. Currently he is engaged in two substantial projects.
A major innovative project that he co-directs with Professor Mark Hawley of the School of Health and Related Research, is The 'Advanced Care Technologies' programme, a R&D and `knowledge transfer´ programme on the roles of assistive and communications technologies in supporting frail and vulnerable older people. (See Research Fields). ACT is supported by Objective 1 European Structural Funds and brings together assistive technology researchers, manufacturers and developers, with companies and organizations that deliver domiciliary and long-term care.
The second project, the FOR-HOME study, is a longitudinal survey of the outcomes of the resettlement of single homeless people. Developed and administered with Maureen Crane and six service-provider organisations, it is the largest homelessness study to be funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. A nationally representative sample of 400 people will be interviewed just before they are resettled and on two occasions over the following 18 months (for further details, see Maureen Crane´s profile).
Activities and Distinctions
- Tony Warnes has strong international links through his research on cross-national migration in Europe and European social policies. He recently co-ordinated a Scientific Network funded by the European Science Foundation on 'The Welfare of Older Migrants in Europe’, and is currently contributing to a study of the need for older people's health and social care services in Portugal funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.
- Tony Warnes was Chair of the British Society of Gerontology during 1994-2000, and Director of SISA between 2000 and 2005. He is an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences and Editor of Ageing & Society (Cambridge University Press). (See Research fields).
- He is a Trustee of Sheffcare Ltd.
