Research Interests
Mike trained in medicine at the University of Nottingham and subsequently in geriatric medicine in Hull and Sheffield. He was appointed to the post of Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in 1994.
Mike has fulfilled a number of different roles with respect to the organisation and delivery of teaching, and the development and progression of the MBChB and other undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses.
His current roles are:
Academic Co-ordinator for Geriatric Medicine: He has developed a programme of teaching in health care for older people within the MBChB undergraduate curriculum with the result that geriatric medicine is now well-developed as a longitudinal theme which is integrated both horizontally and vertically throughout all phases of the course.
Director of Studies for Phase 2: A role which entails co-ordination and delivery of teaching in Phase 2, overall responsibility for all assessment within the Phase, assisting in the resolution of student and/or staff problems relating to the course and providing feedback on the course to both staff and students, ensuring that measures are in place within the phase to monitor teaching quality, and ensuring that staff development opportunities are provided as required.
Academic Co-ordinator for the vertical theme of Clinical Competencies: This involves the planning and integration of clinical competencies throughout all the phases of the curriculum, and the vertical integration of the theme of clinical competencies by meeting regularly with the directors of studies of the phases and other theme co-ordinators.
Mike is Consultant Physician and Geriatrician at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. He has responsibilities in acute general medicine and stroke rehabilitation. He is also Chair of the Medicines Management and Therapeutics Committee for the Trust.
Mike sits on the Examination Management Committee, Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians (London). He has worked within Faculty of Occupational Medicine for approximately 13 years, initially as registrar organiser of clinical examinations and more recently as examiner in the clinical section of the AFOM (Associateship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine). In 1996 he was appointed onto the management committee for this examination, and was also asked to take on the role of host examiner for the AFOM (June examination); Sheffield is the only provincial centre to host this examination. He has made a significant contribution to the process of changing the AFOM from a traditional clinical examination to the "PACES" format used in the MRCP.
