Research Interests
Mike trained as a teacher before joining the nursing profession in the 1970´s. After gaining qualifications in general and psychiatric nursing Mike has worked with older people and their family carers in a variety of clinical, educational and research roles for over 25 years. He was appointed as the first Professor of Gerontological Nursing in the UK in 1995, a position he has held since. He holds Visiting Chairs at the University College of Health Sciences, Borås, West Sweden and Glasgow Caledonian University.
Mike has particular research interests in the needs of frail older people and their family carers in both community and residential environments, and how family and formal carers can work together more effectively. Together with colleagues, he has developed a range of carer assessment tools that have been translated into over 20 languages and are in widespread use in both clinical and research settings.
Recently Mike´s work has focussed on developing concepts of relationship-centred care and their application to enrich the experience of giving and receiving care by using the 'Senses' Framework. Methodologically Mike has focussed on the promotion of participatory approaches to research that engage older people, carers and professionals as partners in the research process. Mike has well established research links in Sweden, Australia and Canada.
