Marie Curie Training Fellowships

Available 2002-2006
For non-UK students registered on doctoral programs from EU member countries and Associated States.
SISA has been designated by the Improving Human Potential for the Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources Programme of European Commission Community Research as a Site for Training in Ageing and Gerontological Education.
Eight Fellowships
Eight postgraduate Fellowships are available during 2002-06. The Fellows will be registered for higher degrees by thesis at a European (non-UK) university. Applicants need to be national of an EU Member State or a State Associated to the European Framework Programme (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia), or have resided in the EU for the last five years. Fellowships are not open to nationals of the host's country.
SISA offers advanced training in all aspects of gerontology and geriatric medicine. SISA's staff have expertise in biochemistry, clinical medicine, demography, information sciences, mental health nursing, psychology, social policy, sociology, social gerontology, social work studies, and speech therapy. Current research programmes include:
- the care and support of older people with dementia; involving older people in setting priorities for health and social services
- consumer-influenced design criteria for residential homes
- the development and implementation of standard assessment practice in primary health care
- the management of stroke patients and their morale
- self-rated health housing options in retirement and the prolongation of independent living among older people
- the benefits and harms of reminiscence as therapy among older people
- services to prevent and alleviate homelessness among older people.
SISA is well placed therefore to support and guide cross-disciplinary research. The Fellows will be encouraged to work with established research project and programme teams, or on topics which bridge their subjects in innovative ways. As SISA also has strong connections with health-care, housing and social service providers, we encourage students to research in collaboration with provider agencies.
Programme design
Individualised advanced training programmes in gerontology and the Fellow's disciplinary specialism will be designed in collaboration with the Fellow. 6 and 12 month Fellowships are available. These are designed to complement the Fellow's doctoral research and not to change pre-existing supervision arrangements. The Fellowship programme will broaden the Fellow's command of ageing studies and research methods, link them to SISA's research programmes and projects, and provide training in the preparation and presentation of research papers, reports and research grant applications.
