About SISA
The Institute is both a core group of specialists in gerontological research and training, who form a Section of the Division of Clinical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, and a cross-faculty network of academics in the University of Sheffield with active interests in gerontology.
SISA'S Mission
- Drawing strength from many departments in the University, our mission is to undertake first-class research into finding cost-effective ways for improving quality of life in old age, with or without extension to life.
In addition to its research activities, the Institute plays a role in influencing policy on ageing and in training the next generation of researchers on ageing. the Institute has links to service and advocacy groups in South Yorkshire, where it has a direct impact on improving the quality of life of older people in the Region.
Each of the Institute's research fields has an international dimension, with funding obtained from the European Commission for their research programmes.
Core academic group
Each of the Institute's research fileds is under the direction of a core academic, with funding obtained from a wide variety of sponsors, including research councils, NHS R&D and European funding streams.
Executive group
The wider network has an Executive drawn from the biological, engineering, social science, nursing and medical school departments.
Institute faculty
The Institute also draws together a faculty membership of 50 resarchers from over 20 departments with interests in ageing.
