Undergraduate year abroad: "The best experience of my life"

Photo - Making friends in China

A crucial part of our four-year courses is the opportunity to spend one year in the country you are studying. Depending on the degree programme, after one or two years of study at Sheffield students head off for their year abroad at top-ranking universities in China, Japan and Korea.

Language skills

The Language Year Abroad offers you an unrivalled opportunity to improve your language skills; in particular, your spoken skills will improve dramatically. It will also give you valuable insights into the country and its people. When we ask our current and past students what they remember most about their degree studies, invariably they point to the Language Year Abroad.

Cost

Most students find that the immense advantages, academic and personal, of the Year Abroad more than justify any extra cost. As the Year Abroad is part of your Sheffield degree you pay reduced tuition fees of £1,350 (if you start your degree in 2013) to Sheffield and you do not pay any fees in China, Japan or Korea. There are also a number of scholarships available for Chinese and Japanese studies students to help cover some costs which are allocated on a competitive basis. These amount to around £2600 for China, and from £5000 to £9000 for Japan.

In addition to the information on this website, we are happy to receive informal enquiries about any aspect of the year abroad from current and prospective students. In the first instance please address your enquiry to the SEAS main office.
