Research Degrees
Embarking on a Ph.D. is a big commitment, but a rewarding one. These webpages provide much of the information you need to establish whether a research degree is right for you. They also make clear the advantages of choosing the School of East Asian Studies should you wish to pursue intensive research on some aspect of contemporary East Asia.
As you look at our webpages, it might be helpful to make a checklist in your mind which includes the following points:
- Does my area of interest fit in with the research clusters of the department (see below)?
- Is there a member of staff whose research interests seem exciting and relevant in terms of the research topic I have in mind?
- Do I need research training? Does Sheffield's Doctoral Development Programme seem attractive in the context of my research background and interests?
- What sources of funding are available to support my research? SEAS is a recognised ESRC outlet for scholarships for research degrees. See the ESRC link on the right of this page.

White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC)
The White Rose East Asia Centre is an exciting partnership between the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds. The National Institute of Chinese Studies and the National Institute of Japanese Studies together constitute the Centre.
The Centre's research activities and postgraduate training concentrate on four research clusters:
- Business, Political Economy and Development
- East Asian Identities and Cultures
- Social Change and Transition in East Asia
- Regionalisation and Globalisation
The clusters give broad direction for developing the research agenda, each embracing prominent and evolving themes in research on East Asia. Each cluster includes multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches and combines and coordinates research activities from different disciplines, as well as straddling political boundaries in East Asia. Each cluster represents an area of existing research strength and priority at Leeds and Sheffield, and builds on the strong track record of language-based area studies and related multidisciplinary research.
