How the ADOPT Scheme Works
Dental occupations are highly competitive and often seen as difficult to enter, so many young people can feel discouraged from trying.
The ADOPT scheme aims to give students in schools and colleges knowledge and skills to make them more confident and accustomed to a university environment.
During the programme they will have the opportunity to:
- Mix with current undergraduate dental students
- Get used to spending time in laboratories, clinics and libraries
- Gain an insight into cutting-edge dental technology
- Gain hands on experience of dental practice working with training models
- Discuss their personal prospects of a dental career

Who can take part?
Year 12 students continuing to Year 13, at registered schools and colleges.
The students should:
- Be the first generation of their immediate family to apply to study at university
- Be year 12 students from a group under-represented in higher education
- Have the potential to achieve the School of Dentistry's entry requirements
- Be studying AS levels including Chemistry and Biology
Where does the programme lead?
Students who complete the two-year programme are guaranteed an interview for an appropriate course at the University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry, subject to meeting minimum academic criteria upon application.
We cannot guarantee however that students from the programme will be offered a university place.
