Students practicing dentistry

A Taste of Dentistry Day

A day of practical exercises to help the students learn about drilling and filling teeth, oral surgery, oral pathology, orthodontics, hygiene and therapy, dental technology. A full day's experience, and the chance to meet current dental students.

Parents can attend the evening session for advice on higher education and dental careers.

E-mentoring training

A tailored session to introduce ADOPT students to our e-mentoring programme. Each ADOPT student will be assigned an e-Mentor who is a current undergraduate at the School of Dentistry. The e-Mentors will be on hand throughout the two year ADOPT programme to answer queries about dentistry and related topics and to provide one to one support via Brightside Trust e-mentoring links.

Outdoor activity day

An outdoor activity and team building day, with a chance to mix with current dental undergraduates in a relaxed and informal setting. Students will take part in confidence and team-building activities encouraging students to overcome obstacles in life.

Study skills, chemistry revision sessions & exam techniques

ADOPT students have the opportunity to attend AS/A2 revision classes to boost their confidence and help them achieve the grades they need to progress to their chosen course at university.

UCAS/UKCAT advice and guidance session

Advice on completing the personal statement for UCAS applications, and a mock interview with a tutor. Students will also receive advice on the UKCAT which must be completed to apply for dentistry in the UK.

Work placement

The ADOPT team will arrange a placement in a dental environment for ADOPT students to take place over the summer break of Phase One to Phase Two.

Voluntary community based work placement

ADOPT students get a chance to take part in volunteering in a community work placement. They work alongside e-Mentors and undergraduate students to develop confidence, team work skills and communication and to benefit their work experience record in preparation for writing a UCAS personal statement.

On-line study materials

As well as e-mentoring ADOPT students can access the Outreach Online website that is specifically designed for their ADOPT year group. Here they are encouraged to post items for staff and fellow students, view up and coming activities and access images from prvious ADOPT events.

Celebration Event

A chance for students to celebrate their achievements during the two year ADOPT scheme. Have some fun and relax with the ADOPT team, tuturs and the new friends they have made during their participation in ADOPT.
