Biography

I have a background in nursing and health visiting, with a specialist focus on the health of Gypsy and Traveller families. I joined the University of Sheffield in 2001 when I was a successful joint applicant to the Department of Health Inequalities Programme for a 2-year study of the Health Status of Gypsies and Travellers in England. A National Primary Care Researcher Development Fellowship enabled me to build on the findings and my PhD research investigated Gypsy and Traveller access to primary health care, with a focus on interactions with health staff and requirements for culturally safe services. I have been closely involved as an advisor to various projects and policy initiatives aimed at improving the health and well-being of Gypsies and Travellers and other marginalised groups and I have recently completed the Evaluation of Gypsy and Traveller core projects in Department of Health Pacesetter Programme aimed at reducing health inequalities.
