Biography
I graduated with a BSc in Economics (Statistics) from the London School of Economics, and an MSc in Medical Statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. For my PhD I constructed the child growth reference centiles for UK children. Following time off to pursue an interest in Textiles and complete a degree in Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University, I joined ScHARR as a lecturer in Medical Statistics in January 2003. In 2005 I was awarded a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching for my work redesigning the teaching of statistics to the undergraduate medical students at Sheffield. In 2008 I was awarded a second Senate Award for my continued commitment to excellence in learning and teaching. At the beginning of 2008 my first book 'How to Display Data' was published by Blackwells. Most recently I have completed an online learning resource for introductory medical statistics 'Critical Numbers'. In addition to my work at the University I am involved with the Royal Statistical Society, as a member of the RSS Council, a member of the Professional Affairs Committee and chair of the RSS local group.
Together with a colleague in Probability and Statistics, Eleanor Stillman, I have set up a 'Schools Poster Competition' in order to promote statistical literacy in schools across South Yorkshire
Research Activities
- Displaying data and information
- Pedagogy: particularly teaching statistics to non-statisticians
- Health Services Research and clinical trials
- Child Health
In addition to my general interest in the methodological issues of the design and analysis of health service research, I have a particular interest in the way that information is displayed and can influence the understanding of what is being presented.
