The 3CPO study
A randomised controlled trial of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) versus non-invasive ventilation (NIV) versus standard treatment for acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema.
Main findings
In patients with acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, non-invasive ventilation induces a more rapid improvement in respiratory distress and metabolic disturbance, but has no effect on short-term mortality.
There were no major differences in treatment efficacy or safety between the two non-invasive ventilation modalities of CPAP and NIPPV.
