Biography
I obtained my first degree in Nutrition & Food Science from Oxford Brookes University and my MSc in Human Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Aberdeen. I also spent 6 months at Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands, where I completed my MSc thesis.
I joined ScHARR in 1999. My work has included literature reviews on newborn screening for inborn errors of metabolism, statins for the prevention of cardiovascular events, early high-dose lipid-lowering therapy to avoid cardiac events, clopidogrel in patients with non-ST-segment-elevation acute coronary syndromes, and oxaliplatin, capecitabine for the adjuvant treatment of colon cancer and single technology appraisals of febuxostat for the management of hyperuricaemia in patients with gout and mifamurtide for osteosarcoma.
I am a member of the Society for Social Medicine (SSM), Health Technology Assessment international (HTAi) and the ScHARR Technology Assessment Group (ScHARR-TAG).
Research Interests
My research interests are:
- Systematic review and meta-analysis of evidence for clinical effectiveness
- Application and development of methods for the systematic review and synthesis of diagnostic evaluations in the field of health services research
- Network meta-analysis (indirect and mixed treatment comparisons)
Teaching interests
My teaching interests are:
- Systematic reviews and critical appraisal techniques
Professional activities
I am a member of ScHARR-TAG (since October 2003), where I undertake health technology assessments (HTA) for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), the Department of Health and others. I also undertake undergraduate and post-graduate teaching within ScHARR.
Current projects
I am currently working on the following projects:
