Biography
I joined ScHARR in 2004 as a Research Associate and from 2004 to 2006 I worked on a number of projects relating to patient safety and quality of care. Since January 2007 I have been involved in systematic reviews of evidence for clinical effectiveness within the Section of Health Economics & Decision Science. I gained my BSc and PhD in genetics and cell biology from the University of Sheffield.
Research interests
My research interests include:
- systematic reviews of clinical effectiveness for healthcare interventions
- development of methods for systematic reviewing and evidence synthesis
- patient safety and quality of care
- complementary and alternative medicine research
Teaching Interests
I teach on the following topics:
- systematic reviewing and critical appraisal
- evidence synthesis and meta-analysis
- study design
Professional Activities
I am currently working on systematic reviews of the following:
- comparison of triage and direct transfer to specialist care centres versus delivery to the nearest local hospital (for Service Delivery and Organisation programme)
- colorectal cancer screening
- enhanced imaging techniques for assessment of axillary metastases (Health Technology Assessment)
- romiplostim for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
I have also recently worked on the following systematic reviews
- impact of visual acuity on utility values
- imatinib for adjuvant treament of gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST)
- chemoprevention of colorectal cancer (Health Technology Assessment)
- homeopathy for insomnia
- pegfilgrastim for prevention of febrile neutropenia
- vildagliptin for type 2 diabetes
- oseltamivir, amantadine and zanamivir for invluenza prophylaxis (NICE Technology Appraisal)
- selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)
I was previously involved in the following projects relating to patient safety and quality of care:
- evaluation of a patient safety climate questionnaire [link]
- analysis of incident reporting rates to the National Patient Safety Agency and the relationship to safety and quality data [link]
- comparison of methods to assess quality of care from hospital case notes (Record Review for Safety and Quality) [link]
