Pemberton Lecture by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins

On Wednesday, 7th September 2011 Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, Chairman of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) delivered the first of ScHARR’s Pemberton Lectures, on the subject of ‘NICE, Past, Present and Future’. The event, which was very successful, was attended by about 250 people. The lecture was followed by a lively question and answer session and an enjoyable wine reception.

The event was organised by ScHARR, but was also part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health’s Lecture Series.

In an analysis published in the Lancet in 2009, Chalmers and Glasziou estimated that there is avoidable waste of 85% of the 100 billion US dollars invested every year in medical research.  A follow-up series of papers looking into this problem in preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological research is currently being prepard.  Iain Chalmers will present some preliminary findings from this work.
