MD Entry Qualifications and Application Procedure
We offer a MD in Health and Related Research here in ScHARR. All applicants to the MD programmes are initially registered on the MPhil and required to pass a `confirmation review´ often towards the end of the first year (second year for part time students). Students are expected to submit a significant piece of written work and/or a presentation at a Departmental research seminar as part of their upgrade.

Entry qualifications and other information
- A holder of the degrees of MB,ChB of this University of at least three years’ standing; or
- A recognised graduate in Medicine who holds a qualification conferring eligibility for full or provisional registration with the General Medical Council, and who at the time of registration holds an appointment as a full-time or part-time member of the established or honorary staff of this University; or
- A recognised graduate in Medicine of at least three years’ standing who holds a qualification
conferring eligibility for full or provisional registration with the General Medical Council, and a Higher Degree from this or another University. - Before applying you should contact your chosen research group to explore research opportunities and to find a supervisor. Students must have at least one supervisor who is a salaried member of the academic staff of the University of Sheffield. Follow the link to Research Sections for more information.
- A detailed research proposal (background to topic and how it is original, methods of sampling, data collection and analysis etc.).
- You will need guaranteed funding for your proposed research. Funding should cover your living expenses, those of any dependents with you, as well as any relevant tuition fees. Information about fees for the MPhil/MD degree can be found by following the link for Postgraduate Research Tuition fees.
- If you are a member of established or honorary University staff (see eligibility criteria b. above) you should be eligible to apply as a Staff Candidate and not have to pay tuition fees.

Entry to the MD in Health and Related Research is extremely competitive so please ensure that you have all the necessary documentation before you put in an application
Applications must be made on the MD research degree application form, which can be downloaded from the left hand side of the page. All applications must be returned to the Postgraduate Research Administrator, for consideration by the Postgraduate Research Committee.
Backdated applications, for recognition of research work already completed, will not be considered.
Please note that if there is missing documentation from your application we will not be able to consider it until everything has been received. We will email you to request these documents are received by a given deadline. If we do not receive the documents by this deadline then your application will be withdrawn.
