Facilities for postgraduate research students

Information Commons

When you study for a research degree at the University of Sheffield, you will join one of the UK's top research institutions, with state-of-the art facilities and resources, including the new Information Commons (pictured).

You will become part of a large community of graduate students, who have access to all necessary facilities to help you to successfully complete your degree.

Within the School, there are excellent facilities for PhD study. You will be given your own computer account that enables use of email, internet, plus all the other normal software packages including word-processing, spreadsheets, specialist statistical packages and on-line journals.

Each full time PhD student will have access to their own desk and computer in one the PGR rooms, in the Innovation Centre and have access to networked printers, scanner and photocopier.  Part time students are able to request a desk if they need one.   The Innovation Centre is equipped with a kitchen and large cafe with vending machines which all students have access to.

In addition, you can access e-mail and the Internet from home (or any networked computer in the world) via MUSE. MUSE also enables remote access to many University library databases, e-journals and other resources.

The University of Sheffield Library is well-stocked and houses extensive book collections and related periodicals. ScHARR's own library complements these facilities, with a range of specialist publications for health studies research.
