The Operational Research section undertakes research and
consultancy with a particular focus on the use of mathematical modelling in
health care decision-making. Broadly it undertakes work in two areas. The first
is the use of modelling in assessing the cost effectiveness of interventions
i.e. modelling in heath technology assessment. The second is the use of
modelling to support operational decision making in the NHS.
Operational Research was originally the in house operational
research unit with Trent Regional Health Authority. Since moving to ScHARR in
1994 the OR section has grown to 12 staff, 7 of whom have 5 years plus
experience and post graduate qualifications in operational research, economics
or statistics. Its main clients include the Department of Health, the National
Institute for Clinical Excellence, Regional NHS Executive, NHS Trusts and
Health Authorities, Research bodies including the National Co-ordinating Centre
for Health Technology Assessment and pharmaceutical companies.
One of the key values of the OR section is its combination of
academic rigour and robust modelling work in the context of university research
whilst being, essentially, a contract research and consultancy organisation
which is geared up to meeting the needs of the government, the NHS and
pharmaceutical industry on important short term projects.
