The following sources have been identified as meeting three criteria: (1) they contain material of interest to staff working in the UK National Health Service, (2) they have some form of search facility, and (3) they do not require individual passwords or payments of any kind.

ACUBASE

American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons

British Dental Association Library Catalogue
The BDA Information Centre computerized database holds unique information on books, journals, packages and videos held in the library plus some references to journal articles and other information.

British Official Publications Current Awareness Service
This database is drawn from the extensive Ford Collection of British Official Publications at Southampton University. They have a subscription to most items published by HMSO. An ever-increasing amount of official publishing is now being undertaken by Government departments and they try to gather as much of this as possible. COIN: Circulars on the Internet
The Department of Health's Internet service providing access to bibliographic details and the text of Departmental circulars including Executive Letters since 1997. Also available is full text of all pre-1995 current Local Authority Circulars (LACs) and Local Authority Social Services Letters (LASSLs) - for technical reasons, these files have have been placed on the Department's LACs and LASSLs pages, rather than on COIN. European Clearing House on Health Systems Reform Literature and Research Database
The European Health Systems Reform Network aims to set up a Europe-wide network of researchers and policy analysts, provide a forum for exchanging information on health systems reform, promote cross-national policy research and facilitate rapid feedback into practice, and encourage multi-centre comparative research. In support of these activities the Network is developing a database of published and "grey" literature on European health systems reform, together with details of ongoing research projects. The database contains information on major changes in the structure and financing of health services in European Union member states and other European countries. Guideline
A very small database of high quality guidelines across a range of topics, including local guideline priorities as these arise. Guidelines that are developed locally, as well as national and international ones are considered for inclusion. Guidelines are obtained from local and national groups, professional bodies and royal colleges, as well as librarians, practitioners and other staff across the health service. Literature searches, other guideline database and the internet are also used. Health Promotion Information Centre

Developed by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Citation Index (CCI) consists of approximately 180,000 bibliographic citations dated from 1963 through 1999. The CAM citations were extracted from the National Library of Medicine’s Medline database.

National Guideline Clearinghouse (U.S.)
The National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents produced by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP). National Research Register
The National Research Register (NRR) is a register of ongoing and recently completed research projects funded by the United Kingdom's National Health Service. The NHS Economic Evaluation Database is a database of structured abstracts of economic evaluations of health care interventions. Cost- benefit analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses and cost-utility analyses are identified from a variety of sources and assessed according to set quality criteria. Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
OMIM(TM), Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man. This database is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders authored and edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, and developed for the World Wide Web by NCBI, the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The database contains textual information, pictures, and reference information. Outcomes Literature Database
This database provides details of materials related to the study and development of methods of assessing changes in health status as the result of receiving a health or social care intervention. It is intended to inform those working in the field of outcomes assessment. It contains details of published and grey literature (unpublished and internal papers and reports) connected with health outcomes work in all settings within health care services. Its primary focus is UK, but includes materials on US, European and Australasian literature. From the end of March 1997, HELMIS, the Health Management Information Service based within the Nuffield Institute, will take over the responsibilities of scanning journals for outcomes related literature.
