Becoming ADEPT : (Applying Diagnosis, (a)Etiology, Prognosis & Therapy methodological filters to retrieving the evidence)Introduction"Becoming ADEPT: Applying Diagnosis Etiology Prognosis and Therapy methodological filters for retrieving the evidence" is a workshop and distance learning based programme created for South Thames Regional Library Service by Andrew Booth, Director of Information Resources, School of Health and Related Research, University of Sheffield, and designed by Andrew Booth and Alison Hicks. The programme is designed to be supported by two workshops:-
and comprises 6 distance learning packages:
These packages correspond quite closely to the User Guides to the Medical Literature published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). However after providing a brief introduction to the design of each type of study the emphasis is very much on retrieving the literature. In this regard they are heavily indebted to the work of the Health Information Research Unit at McMaster University, Canada for the investigation and development of methodological filters to retrieve higher quality studies. A brief description of the ADEPT programme will be published in the December 1997 issue of Health Libraries Review. A full evaluation is currently underway and it is hoped to disseminate this too once it is completed. A PowerPoint Presentation Introducing ADEPT is available for viewing online or downloading. Acknowledgements: Andrew Booth and Alison Hicks gratefully acknowledge the support and assistance of the following: Caroline Sawers, Reinhard Wentz, Robin Snowball and Anne Lusher, Andre Tomlin and, of course the team from McMaster:- Anne McKibbon, Cindy Walker-Dilks, Nancy Wilczynski, Robert Hayward and Brian Haynes.
