Czech: Level 3 structure

In the final year, you will further consolidate the language gains made during your Year Abroad or other stay in the Czech Republic.
Oral practice and translation skills classes develop your abilities to speak conversational Czech and prepare you to use your language skills in a professional environment.
Units on Czech history, politics, film and literature complement units on language usage and translation. Because your tutors are active researchers in linguistics, we explore with you questions like the following:
- Czechs sometimes use different grammatical endings when they speak from the ones they employ when they write. Why is that, and how do we learn to make those choices ourselves?
- How do Czechs decide when to use the formal you (vy) and the informal you (ty)? What other differences are there when you speak to someone you are on formal or informal terms with?
- Why does the word prosím sometimes seem to mean 'please', but other times 'excuse me', 'cheers', or 'pardon', and how can we tell the difference?
An independently researched dissertation in Czech studies allows you to explore one topic in considerable depth, using Czech sources.
