Language classes
At Sheffield, we focus on acquiring language for communicative competence, and on language situated in its cultural context. Each year, your course will be team-taught by native speakers and non-native speakers, and will use a variety of innovative materials for the study of language and culture that have been developed right here at Sheffield.
Structure
The degree structure is split over three levels, with a year abroad between levels 2 and 3. In other words, it is a four-year course.
You spend your first year acquiring the basics of Czech grammar and conversational skills, and learning about Czech history through seminar work. The second year focuses on giving you the communicative skills for the Year Abroad and getting you to read and discuss texts in Czech. In your third year, you´ll spend a semester in either Prague or Brno on our Erasmus exchange, and in your fourth year your language course will explore the different varieties and levels of Czech.
Many students take advantage of Czech summer school scholarships, offered to us by the Czech Ministry of Education, which pay the entire cost of attending a three- or four-week course in one of the Czech Republic´s major cities.
