Welcome to the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies!
If you have always wanted to become proficient in Russian, Polish or Czech you´ve come to the right address. Our Honours courses in Russian, Polish or Czech Studies aim to produce students who master Russian, Czech or Polish to a professional standard in a variety of settings. Language classes thus play a central role throughout the range of single and dual honours degree programs we offer. But even if your main interest is in acquiring and honing your language skills, you will find that language can only be understood in the context of culture. All of the degree programmes in our Department therefore combine language study with a full range of courses on the contexts of modern Russian, Polish or Czech society, culture and history.
Why Sheffield?
The Sheffield Russian & Slavonic Studies department is highly rated in surveys of Russian departments. For research it ranks in the top 3 in the UK, and it consistently receives high teaching quality ratings from external and internal monitors. No wonder, there are quite a few things that make the Sheffield learning experience different from that at other Slavonic departments. At Sheffield, you'll study Russian on one of our intensive language programmes, on which beginners and post A-level students are taught separately until they return from their year abroad. In addition, there are plenty of optional modules to choose from, including two other Slavonic languages, Polish and Czech, that you can study to a degree level.
Mix & match
Sheffield offers what you need to become a competent, culturally aware speaker of Russian, Polish or Czech. But there is quite some flexibility in our degrees at Level 1. Our seven lecturing staff and four native-speaker tutors offer a wide range of expertly taught courses: practical language classes in Russian, Polish and Czech; Soviet and post-Soviet literature, culture, film, art & visual culture; cultural theory & Intellectual History; Russian linguistics; the history of East & Central Europe. This system of options allows students, supported by their tutors, to determine their own focus of study. Whether you choose to focus on art, culture or linguistics, or even combine both, it is possible, and the choice is yours.
In a caring environment
Most classes in the Department are small and staff-student relationships are friendly and informal. We pride ourselves in offering students pastoral support in a caring environment. And last but not least, studying at Sheffield is not all work and no play. Our students run a Russian society (VodSoc) as well as a Polish club and there are plenty of opportunities in and around Sheffield to meet Russian, Polish or Czech nationals and practise your language skills, e.g. in the Russian café and shop on London Road, at the Sheffield Czech and Slovak Society meetings or in one of the Polish clubs and associations in town.
