MPhil and PhD research degrees
For students wishing to embark on a sustained piece of individual research, the department offers MPhil and PhD programmes. The MPhil and PhD both involve the writing of a thesis under the supervision of a member or members of academic staff.
- The MPhil normally requires 2 years of full-time study (4 years part-time)
- The PhD requires 3 years of full-time study (6 years part-time). The PhD is expected to constitute an original contribution to knowledge.
- Most candidates for the PhD register initially for an MPhil, and upgrade to PhD after one year of research (two years part-time).

Research topics
Although the department supervises research projects based in the core areas of Russian and Slavonic Studies, many of our graduate students are not speakers of Slavonic languages and pursue multi-disciplinary projects.
This is especially true in the case of students attached to the Bakhtin Centre. We welcome proposals related to all areas in which our staff have expertise.
