HR Excellence in Research

HR Excellence in Research logo  The University of Sheffield has been given the European Commission's HR Excellence in Research Award. The award recognises an institution's progress towards a high quality research environment for research staff and postgraduate researchers.

In order to obtain the award, institutions measure their performance against the principles stated in the Concordat to support the Career Development of Researchers. A gap analysis is undertaken and an action plan is devised in order to address any issues raised. The action plan is then submitted to the UK panel, which includes a representative from the European Commission, who then decide on whether or not to give the award.

In the University of Sheffield a gap analysis was carried out between January 2012 and March 2012. The analysis focused on current institutional policy and practice in relation to each of the Concordat statements.

Where gaps were identified, appropriate actions were identified in order to address pertinent issues. These actions were collated into a plan which was the subject of an online consultation in April/May 2012.

A copy of the University's action plan and final submission document can be downloaded from the box on the right.

The University was given the award on 3rd September 2012.
