2008 CBE

Professor Ian Philp, founder of the Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing, was awarded a CBE for "services to Healthcare". Professor Philp has been an advisor to the World Health Organisation, as well as the National Director for Older People in the Department of Health.

2007 Knighthood

Gordon Duff, Florey Professor of Molecular Medicine and previously Medical Research Dean at the University, received a knighthood for "services to Public Health". In 2006, he led an inquiry into safety after the Northwick Park drugs trial that left six men seriously ill. His subsequent report contained 22 recommendations to increase safety in clinical studies.

2007 CBE

Stuart Tanner, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics, was awarded a CBE for his contribution to medicine. Professor Tanner is a leader in childhood liver disease and his research has gained him international respect. He has also been recognised for his services to best practice within the NHS.

2007 Knighthood

Sir David Read, an Emeritus Professor at the University, received a knighthood for "services to Biological Science". David has spent the last 40 years working at the University and is also Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society.

2005 OBE

Emeritus Professor Gillian Gehring, of the department of Physics and Astronomy, received an OBE in 2005 for "services to Physics and Equal Opportunities". Among her many professional activities, Professor Gehring is a member of the editorial board of the New Journal of Physics.

Professor Anthony Ryan, ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the Polymer Centre, was awarded an OBE in 2005 for "services to Science".

2005 OBE

Professor Keith Ridgway, Professor of Design and Manufacture, was awarded an OBE in the 2005 Birthday honours list for "services to the UK Manufacturing Industry". He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

2004 CBE

Professor Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University, was awarded a CBE for "services to Physics" in 2004 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001. Before moving to Sheffield, he was Head of the Division of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences at the University of Oxford.

2003 Canon

The Reverend Canon Professor Loveday Alexander, Professor in the Department of Biblical Studies, is an ordained priest in the Anglican Church and in 2003 was appointed Canon-Theologian at Chester Cathedral.

2002 Knighthood

Professor Sir Ian Kershaw, Professor of Modern History at the University since 1989, was knighted in 2002 for "services to History". He is also a fellow of the British Academy, of the Royal Historical Society, of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in Bonn.

2001 Knighthood

Professor Sir Anthony Bottoms, Professional Fellow in the School of Law, was knighted for "services to the Criminal Justice System". He was also elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1997, awarded the Sellin-Glueck Prize of the American Society of Criminology in 1996, and has since received a lifetime achievement award at the European Society of Criminology's (ESC) annual conference in Bologna 2007.
