Professor Ian Philp, founder of the Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing, was awarded a CBE for "services to Healthcare". Professor Philp has been an advisor to the World Health Organisation, as well as the National Director for Older People in the Department of Health. |

2007 Knighthood
Gordon Duff, Florey Professor of Molecular Medicine and previously Medical Research Dean at the University, received a knighthood for "services to Public Health". In 2006, he led an inquiry into safety after the Northwick Park drugs trial that left six men seriously ill. His subsequent report contained 22 recommendations to increase safety in clinical studies. |

Stuart Tanner, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics, was awarded a CBE for his contribution to medicine. Professor Tanner is a leader in childhood liver disease and his research has gained him international respect. He has also been recognised for his services to best practice within the NHS. |

Sir David Read, an Emeritus Professor at the University, received a knighthood for "services to Biological Science". David has spent the last 40 years working at the University and is also Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society. |

Emeritus Professor Gillian Gehring, of the department of Physics and Astronomy, received an OBE in 2005 for "services to Physics and Equal Opportunities". Among her many professional activities, Professor Gehring is a member of the editorial board of the New Journal of Physics. |

Professor Sir Anthony Bottoms, Professional Fellow in the School of Law, was knighted for "services to the Criminal Justice System". He was also elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1997, awarded the Sellin-Glueck Prize of the American Society of Criminology in 1996, and has since received a lifetime achievement award at the European Society of Criminology's (ESC) annual conference in Bologna 2007. |
