EMERGe: Embedding Mindfulness Early Research Group
EMERGe is a group of researchers based at the University of Sheffield, who are individually and collectively dedicated to understanding the benefits of mindfulness. Our aim is to enable early access to mindfulness within community
settings. Our work into schools and pre-schools enables teachers and carers to embed mindfulness into their daily classroom activities. Our work in the laboratory helps us to understand why mindfulness appears to be so good for us. We also work into health settings, alongside our NHS colleagues, to explore the
use of mindfulness in other settings.
EMERGe is dedicated to exploring the benefits of learning mindfulness skills. The group started work with young children in infant schools, when we ran a pilot study of our series of mindfulness activities. Following the successful results from this study, we have continued to investigate whether mindfulness can help children in the classroom. Much of our research is still focussed on the application of mindfulness in the early years of childhood – in particular in community settings, such as schools and pre-schools. We are also extending this research to secondary school and higher education settings. Our primary aim is to enable educators to help children to be more aware of themselves in relation to their peers, and as such to promote compassion and kindness.
