Annie Spiers awarded an MBE for her youth work

Annie Spiers

Annie Bush (as she was) graduated from the Department of Psychology in 1986, and worked as a drugs counsellor from 1988 until 1995. She helped to set up the Big Buzz in 1999: a charity aiming to provide a wide variety of activities for kids in Everton after school time.

"We work with primary school kids and their families with the club open daily 3.30 - 5.30pm in term times and some occasional holiday trips and playschemes"

She also started and is director of In Another Place, an alternate nativity play staged inside a group of cast-iron statues created by Anthony Gormley sited at Crosby Beach, Merseyside. This production attracted approximately 5000 people to the beach in December 2005. This has led to a whole number of related events, including ones for Liverpool, European City of Culture.
