Prospective Postgraduates

Students' Union

Band

Our Students' Union has won countless awards for being the best in the UK. You don't have to have been an undergraduate here to know how good it is. What you might not realise is that postgraduate students play a central role in the way our Students' Union is run.

Many of our facilities are developed with postgraduate students in mind. We reserve places for postgraduates on all the main committees. There is an active taught postgraduate committee, and a lively postgraduate society called Progress.

We know you take your education and your career seriously. But we also know you still want opportunities to socialise, take part in activities and be entertained - and that doesn’t always mean cold beer and loud music. We try to make sure we cater for everyone’s taste.

Entertainment

Three on-campus venues attract DJs and bands from around the world. We have club nights running almost every night of the week playing pop, rock, dance, hip-hop and retro.

The 400-seater Students' Union cinema screens foreign films, cult classics or box office smashes. You can watch dance and theatre performances, and stimulate your mind with live, high-profile speakers. Or just take some time to relax and be entertained at our regular open-mic night, pub quiz or our hugely popular comedy night.

The postgraduate committees and Progress organise social events specifically for graduate students. This can mean anything from a barbecue on a sunny afternoon, to an evening's ice skating.

Join in

Postgraduates are involved with many of our clubs and societies, which cover national, religious, political, academic, and other recreational interests.

Societies and sports clubs are co-ordinated through The Source, which also runs Give It A Go – our pick and mix activities scheme. You can try out a range of new activities without having to make a major time and money commitment – just pay and play.

Sheffield Volunteering offers you the chance to work in local schools and help the disabled, the elderly and other disadvantaged groups.

Support

The Student Advice Centre provides a confidential, free advice and information service which handles more than 20,000 enquiries each year. They offer specialist advice and support on housing, finance, academic, employment and immigration, as well as general welfare issues. The centre is open Monday to Friday all year, and is particularly well used by postgraduates.

We also run Nightline, a phone service offering general advice and help from 8pm to 8am.

Even more for you

The time you spend in your Students' Union helps fund more opportunities for you. Money from our bars and shops goes back into our services, activities, and support facilities. These in turn are shaped by you.

We want you to get the most out of your time here. That means listening to you, and helping turn your ideas into action.
