About the course

MA - 1 year full time
Postgraduate Diploma - 9 months full time

Accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.

You'll learn how to search out information and conduct interviews, how to use your news judgement to evaluate stories, and how to organise and structure the material you have gathered and present it in an engaging and informative way.

You'll learn how to present your work online and how to take advantage of the multimedia aspects of the web such as video and audio and we'll teach you how to use social media effectively.

You'll work with students from the other applied journalism courses on integrated projects replicating the multi-platform publishing now central for most media companies.

Entry requirements

Normally a 2:1 degree or overseas equivalent, or relevant professional experience in the case of mature applicants.

Previous journalistic experience is not required but excellent writing and communication skills are essential, plus wide general knowledge and an appetite for investigation. Good computing and word processing skills are desirable.

You'll need to include samples of your writing in English in a journalistic style in the supplementary section of your application.

English language requirements for overseas students

Minimum IELTS score of 7.5 overall with a minimum of 7.5 in the writing element.

Discussion of journalism ideas informs all our journalism degrees.

We have strong industry links. You'll go on a three-day field trip to London, visiting national news organisations for briefings on current developments with senior editors and meeting politicians and political journalists.

Guest lecturers from the media industries, regulators, campaigning groups and research institutes speak regularly in the department. Web editors run online 'newsdays'.

Work experience opportunities

Throughout your course you'll get the chance to take part in periods of work experience. Employers regularly notify us of opportunities and we have a dedicated work placement administrator who'll help find an opportunity that’s right for you.Previous students have found that work placements often lead to employment after graduation. Work experience is not a part of our theoretical courses.

This course is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.

Real world learning environment

Our facilities are designed to simulate a real-life working environment. We have separate newsrooms divided into broadcast, print and web.

You'll also have access to a Press Association newsfeed, telephones, daily newspapers and televison TV.

Movie and still cameras and Marantz digital audio recording kits are available. The web newsroom has 22 Macs equipped with multimedia and web-authoring software.
