Journalism Studies (Web) - MA

Department of Journalism Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences

Our applied web journalism courses are highly regarded by employers. You'll learn in an environment that replicates the pressures of a professional newsroom. This sister course of MA Web Journalism adds flexibility for students, particularly from overseas, who expect to start their career in countries other than the UK.

About the course

MA - 1 year full time

You'll learn how to search out information and conduct interviews, how to use your news judgement to evaluate stories, and how to organise and structure the material you have gathered and present it in an engaging and informative way.

You'll be taught how to present your work on the web and how to take advantage of the multimedia aspects of the web such as video and audio. We'll teach you how to use social media effectively.

You'll work with students from the other applied journalism courses on integrated projects replicating the multi-platform publishing now central for most media companies.

Students follow a similar course of study to MA Web Journalism, but do not need to take Law for Journalists or Power and Society, which are UK specific modules.

Your career

A masters from Sheffield is the mark of someone who thinks differently. Our graduates are creative, disciplined individuals who make a difference wherever they go. Recent graduates from our web journalism courses are now employed as journalists all over the UK and in many countries overseas.

About us

You'll be taught by professionals who have worked at the highest level in newspaper, magazine, radio, television and online journalism. You'll gain professional skills that allow you to specialise, yet are flexible enough to give you a real edge in a rapidly changing multimedia world.

Discussion of journalism ideas informs all our journalism degrees.

We have strong industry links. You'll go on a three-day field trip to London, visiting national news organisations for briefings on current developments with senior editors and meeting politicians and political journalists.

Guest lecturers from the media industries, regulators, campaigning groups and research institutes speak regularly in the department. Web editors run online 'newsdays'.

Real world learning environment

Our facilities are designed to simulate a real-life working environment. We have separate newsrooms divided into broadcast, print and web. You'll also have access to a Press Association newsfeed, telephones, daily newspapers and television news.

Video and still cameras and Marantz digital audio recording kits are available. The web newsroom has 22 Macs equipped with multimedia and web-authoring software.
