About the course

1 year full time/2-3 years part time by distance learning

This course is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society and is excellent preparation for a career as a statistician. You'll learn how to solve realistic, practical, statistical problems and gain personal skills like oral, written communication and time-management skills that are in demand from employers.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2:1 honours degree with substantial mathematical and statistical components or a pass at an equivalent level in the Graduate Certificate.

English language requirements

IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in each part), or TOEFL 90–91 (iBT), or equivalent.

About us

Our staff are engaged in a wide range of professional activities both nationally and internationally, as officers or committee members of societies and organisations, and as organisers and speakers at conferences. This means they're up to date with current applications of statistical methods, so what we teach you is based on the very latest developments.

The department has its own Statistical Services Unit, which provides a range of services to industry, commerce and the public services, including consultancy, training courses and the development of computer software.

As part of the MSc, you'll have the opportunity to observe the work of the Statistical Services Unit, which will give you an insight into the job of a statistical consultant

Learning environment

We're based in the very centre of the University campus, close to the Students’ Union and the main library and computing facilities. You'll have access to a wide selection of postgraduate texts and a number of leading journals in probability and statistics. You'll also get your own desk in an open plan office with other postgraduate student

Flexible study options

This course can be taken full-time over a year by attending lectures in Sheffield or part-time over two to three years via online distance learning. Resident students and distance learning students work together on some group projects.
