About the course
MSc: 1 year full time/2 years part time
Diploma: 9 months full time
This practical degree has been developed with the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Health and Safety Executive to equip you with skills and expertise in process safety, loss prevention and risk assessment. The course prepares you for a career in the oil and gas, chemical, nuclear and pharmaceutical industries, or with any of the consultancies that service those industries.
Entry requirements
You'll need a 2:1 or a 2:2 honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in a relevant subject.
English language requirements for overseas students
IELTS 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in each part), or TOEFL 87 (IBT), or equivalent.

Full time or part time
This course is available full time over a year, part time over two or three years, as a postgraduate diploma or each module can be taken as a short course for people already working in industry.
Part-time students will need to complete all modules within two years, with an optional non-fee paying third year in which to complete a dissertation.
One module is taught per month from September to June and is four days long. You must complete four modules each year, which is a total of 16 days attendance in Sheffield each year, plus one additional day to sit the examination.
Your course is based on the expertise of our specialist research groups.
Facilities
You'll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including purpose-built labs, the Harpur Hill Research Station for large-scale work, extensive computing facilities and a modern applied science library.
The four research groups that give our masters students such high-quality facilities are: Energy and Environmental Engineering Group, Process Fluidics Group, Particle Products Group, and Biological and Environmental Systems Group.
