French Studies - MA (Research Track)

About the course

1 year full time/2 years part time

With this course, you'll develop a broader and deeper understanding of French culture and society. Your new understanding, skills and knowledge will be excellent preparation for rigorous independent research at MPhil or PhD level.

Entry requirements

A good honours degree in French, or in a dual or combined honours degree incorporating French as a named component, from a recognised UK institution (or the equivalent from a non-UK university). If you have a different qualification, please contact us for advice.

English language requirements for overseas students

IELTS 7 (minimum 6.5 in each part), or TOEFL 100 (IBT), or equivalent.

Core modules

You’ll take core modules in one of four specialist areas:

  • Medieval Studies
  • French Cultural Studies
  • Gender Studies
  • Constructions of the Body

Optional modules

You can choose between two flexible pathways to make up 180 credits. Options include diverse subjects such as

  • Critical Theory
  • Advanced Translation from French
  • Research Skills modules

Teaching

  • Seminars
  • Independent study
  • Modules are taught in English or French, as appropriate

Assessment

  • Coursework assignments (including essays, translations and a variety of analytical exercises)
  • Projects or a dissertation

Fees and funding

If you're offered a place, you can apply for Faculty awards or the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Block Grant Partnerships. The department's Marjorie Shaw bursaries are also normally available to MA students.

The latest facilities and resources

We're leaders in humanities knowledge transfer and the development of digital resources. We've been awarded funding to create a database of French film stars, electronic editions of old French romances and the Chronicles of Froissart, and an online archive relating to André Gide.

You'll be based in our new ultra-modern workspace, with dedicated study areas for postgraduate students and a café where you can relax and catch up with friends. We share the building with other schools in the Faculty of Arts, which creates opportunities for collaboration between departments.

Nearby is the modern Humanities Research Institute, which hosts seminars, workshops and conferences. The Information Commons and Western Bank Library are also close, giving you easy access to the research collections that will complement your studies.
