A PhD at Sheffield
When you take your PhD at Sheffield, you're welcomed into an academic community where you're treated as a colleague. You'll do work that makes a positive difference to other people: improving lives, changing the way we think, helping us to understand the world and how we live in it.
Our expertise
You'll work with leading researchers. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, 93 per cent of our staff who were surveyed were doing work that was internationally recognised or world leading. We use our research power to tackle big problems: global issues such as climate change and sustainable development; national concerns such as how to make our society fairer for everyone.
Your talent
Our research students make the University of Sheffield what it is. Our global reputation is down to staff and students working together towards a common goal. If you're ready to do research that matters, we want to hear from you.
What kind of PhD could you apply for?
Your future
Our PhD students graduate with the confidence to lead. They have the theoretical knowledge, the practical skills and the personal qualities employers look for. They're ready to challenge accepted ways of thinking and come up with new ideas and better ways to help people.
A Sheffield graduate never stands still. Your PhD is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to learning. You'll always want to know more. You'll always want to do better. If that sounds like the kind of future you want, you might just be ready for the challenge.
How we support you
All our PhD students have the support of at least one supervisor. You'll also take modules from the University's Doctoral Development Programme. Your supervisor will work with you to identify your training and development needs.
The Doctoral Development Programme develops skills specific to your area of research and your future career. If the training you need isn't covered by the programme, we will either create something for you or look outside the University.
If you're an international student, you can get free English language support from the English Language Training Centre as part of the programme.
