UK-China Scholarships for Excellence

The Scholarships for Excellence scheme is jointly funded by the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China to enable young and outstanding PhD students and post doctoral researchers in science and technology to study and conduct cutting edge research in each other's country.

Since its launch in 2005, over 100 UK and Chinese scholars have benefited from Scholarships for Excellence and its sister programme, Fellowships for Excellence. The 2010 programme will provide funding for up to 30 new PhD and post doctoral Students in the UK.

Award details

A Scholarship for Excellence award covers the cost of the tuition fees and provides a monthly, tax-free maintenance stipend of £650 for the period of study or research.

Awards are tenable for between 3-4 years full-time doctoral study and up to one year for Masters study.

How to apply

The University is not involved in the selection and award of these scholarships. However, as the tuition fee element of the award is paid for by the University, you must contact the relevant academic department before applying. The supervisor must then forward a copy of the application to Research and Innovation Services.

Scholarships for Excellence

  1. Before applying to the Scholarships for Excellence scheme you must contact the relevant academic department and potential supervisor regarding the application.
  2. Complete an application for admission as a postgraduate student. Details of how to apply for admission can be found by following the link on the left. Applications for admission should be submitted as soon as possible.
  3. Wait until you have received an admissions or applicant number.
  4. Apply directly to the China Scholarship Council as detailed on their website. Your potential supervisor will need to complete Section 10 of the application form, and must forward a copy of the application to pgr-scholarships@sheffield.ac.uk.

The deadline for applications is 20 March 2010.
