University of Sheffield funding
The University of Sheffield invests heavily in the development of our postgraduate community. Students who wish to undertake postgraduate study in any Faculty of the University can apply for the annual University Prize and Faculty Scholarship competitions. We also offer a range of unique funding opportunities through donations from benefactors and our close relationships with other universities and organisations.
University-funded schemes are listed below. Please note that individual departments may have different deadlines for PhD applications and you are advised to check the application process for your intended department as soon as possible.
Applications for most funding schemes open in October for the following academic year (i.e. October 2013 for 2014-15 entry), and close around February (2014 for 2014-15 entry).

UK Research Councils
The UK Research Councils are a major source of financial support for research postgraduates. These bodies are government-funded agencies engaged in the support of research in different disciplines. There are various types of scholarship available. In most cases applications are made to the University. Awards for UK students normally cover tuition fees and a maintenance allowance.

Other funding bodies
Many charities, foundations and trusts provide funding for postgraduate study. Some offer full scholarships and others offer smaller awards. Some scholarships are for specific subject areas or applicants while others have more general eligibility criteria.
