Marshall Scholarships
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to 40 Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.
As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success.
Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament, Marshall Scholarships are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and commemorate the humane ideals of the Marshall Plan conceived by General George C Marshall. They express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts.
The University of Sheffield is one of a limited number of Marshall Partnership Universities. As such, Marshall Scholarships are available for three-year research degrees, in addition to the standard one and two year Scholarships.
Award details
The total value of a Marshall Scholarship varies a little according to the circumstances of each applicant, but the figure tends on average to be about £23,000 a year. This comprises the cost of the Overseas tuition fees; a monthly maintenance stipend of £767 per month; return air fares from the US; and an allowance of £3,300 for arrival and relocation, books, travel in connection with studies, daily expenses, and thesis preparation.
Awards for doctoral study are tenable for a maximum of three years full-time. Awards for Masters study are tenable for either one year or two years dependant upon the particular scheme applied for.
Eligibility
Eligibility is determined by the Marshall Scholarships eligibility criteria as set out on their website. Applicants should review this guidance in the first instance.
The general eligibility requirements are:
- Academic requirements – applicants should have, or expect to achieve, an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States, with a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or A-) in an appropriate area of study. Applicants must not hold a degree or equivalent qualification from a British university.
- Allowed study options – applicants should be registering on their first year of study with the University on an eligible full-time or part-time programme of postgraduate taught or research study.
- Residency restrictions – applicants must be citizens of the United States of America.
