AHRC Scholarships
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) supports world-class research that furthers our understanding of human culture and creativity. The University of Sheffield has been awarded substantial AHRC funding for postgraduate research scholarships across the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences.
The University of Sheffield offers three types of AHRC award:
- Doctoral Awards – funding for full or part-time study leading to a doctoral degree (PhD). For 2012-13, we are inviting applications in the following subject areas: Law, Asian Language & Culture, and all subject areas in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities.
- Research Preparation Masters (RPM) Awards – funding for Masters courses where the focus is on advanced study and research training that is explicitly intended to provide a foundation for further research at doctoral level. For 2012-13, we are inviting RPM applications for subjects in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities.
- Professional Preparation Masters (PPM) Awards – funding for Masters courses where the focus is on the development of high-level skills and competences as a preparation for professional practice in a field relevant to the content of the course. For 2012-13, these are available in Design, Interpreting & Translation, Journalism & Publishing, and Librarianship, Archives, Record Management & Information Science.
Award details
The type of AHRC scholarship awarded is based on an applicant's residency status. UK applicants and EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of their course are eligible for the full scholarship. This pays:
- the standard UK/EU tuition fees
- an annual, tax-free maintenance stipend at the standard UK research rate, which for 2011-12 was £13,590 for Doctoral students, £9,490 for Research Preparation Masters students, and £8,845 for Professional Preparation Masters students.
- Doctoral students are entitled to apply for additional funds to support fieldwork and conference attendance.
EU applicants that have not been resident in the UK for 3 years immediately preceding the start of their course are eligible for a fees-only award, paying the standard UK/EU tuition fees only.
International applicants are not eligible for AHRC funding.
Awards for doctoral study are tenable for a maximum of three years full-time and five years part-time subject to satisfactory progress. Awards for Masters study are tenable for between 9-12 months full-time and 12-24 months part-time.

Eligibility is determined the AHRC's eligibility criteria as set out in their 'Postgraduate Studentships: Guide to Student Eligibility. Applicants' should review the AHRC guidance in the first instance.

The general eligibility requirements are:
- You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK in an appropriate area of study. Those applying for a doctoral studentship should normally have, or be studying for, a Masters degree or similar postgraduate qualification.
- You should be applying to start your first year of study in 2012-13 on a full-time or part-time programme of eligible postgraduate study, within the AHRC's subject areas listed above. AHRC scholarship funding begins on 1st October each year.
- Awards are open to UK and EU applicants. The type of studentship awarded is based on an applicant’s residency status.

PhD candidates:
Applications for AHRC Doctoral scholarships for 2012-13 entry are now closed. Applications are being reviewed and applicants will be informed if they have been successful by the end of April at the latest.
Masters candidates:
Applications for AHRC Masters scholarships for 2012-13 entry are now open. Please see the Masters Scholarships Application Process page for details. Closing date: 30 March 2012.
