Research Summary
This dissertation aims to investigate the influence of the kind of national identity on political attitudes towards national symbols. National symbols are a source of popular emotions (Kolsko 2006) and thus serve to enhance national attachments. Thus, the way how people are involved with their nation, will influence their political support of national symbols. The national identity feeling could be characterized by a major symbolic or civic attachment to the nation. The national identity content approach shows that national symbols specially congregate the support from citizens who hold a symbolic rather than a civic attachment to the nation. However, to what extent would symbolic attached citizens support national symbols when they are confronted with a multiple-national identity?
