Thesis Title: The Governance of Ethnic Identity in South Yorkshire

Start Year: 2006

Supervisors

Rhiannon Vickers and Andrew Geddes

Research Topic

This research is an ESRC-funded CASE studentship, in partnership with South Yorkshire Police. The research will focus on the interplay between identity, security and governance in South Yorkshire.

This will be achieved by answering a number of questions including: How, why and with what effect do ethnic boundaries become meaningful in local politics? How responsive are local structure of governance to ethnic diversity? And what implications does ethnic identity have for perceptions of security at individual and group levels?

The research will look at three ethnic communities: Pakistanis (an `old´ community); Somalis (a `new´ community); and Gypsy Travellers (a `mobile´ community).

The methodology will include structured interviews with members of the ethnic communities, South Yorkshire Police, voluntary agencies and local governance bodies; focus groups with women, community leaders and young people from the three ethnic communities; collaboration and fieldwork with South Yorkshire Police to see the day-to-day policing of minorities and the work done by the Community Engagement Teams; the use of GIS mapping techniques; and the gathering and analysing of relevant data and statistics.
