The Department has a research ethos that is well-established and consciously sustained. The Department's vision of an inclusive research culture that embraces different approaches and areas has prevented the twin dangers of either fragmenting into groupings defined by sub-fields, or reverting to being a collection of individual researchers with little intellectual interaction.

Research Groups

This vision has been supported through a policy of organising its research into groups since the late 1980s, with most members of staff being a member of more than one. Each PGR student is also attached to an appropriate group. Five presently operate: Comparative Politics, Governance and Public Policy, International Relations, Political Economy and Political Theory, providing a significant presence across the range of disciplinary sub-fields.

Research Centres

The Department´s three research centres - the Political Economy Research Centre (PERC); the Centre for Political Theory and Ideologies (CPTI); and the Centre for International Policy Research (CIPOL) - make a special contribution to the realisation of a cross-cutting and inclusive research culture.
