International Politics and Security Studies

About the course

The single honours degree in International Politics and Security Studies will develop an understanding of theories and concepts of peace, conflict and security and their application to local, national, regional and global; the nature and significance of politics, security and co-operation as local, national, regional and global activities; the origins and evolution of the international political and security system, including contemporary challenges; changing definitions and understandings of, human security, different interpretations of world political and security events and issues from a variety of perspectives.

The department's reputation was confirmed with the award of the highest possible ratings for both research and teaching. You will be taught by academics who are at the forefront of the subject. The department's aim is to give students an in-depth understandng of politics and political issues, supported by a range of personal transferable skills, including communication and presentation skills, working in groups, writing reports and essays, gathering information and planning projects.

Structure

The programme is built around a spine of core courses covering the key aspects of international politics and security studies, as well as methods for carrying out study, research, and interpretation. These are complemented by a range of optional modules, as well as options for work-based learning, study abroad, and individual research projects.
