Description
This module seeks to introduce students to some of the most important theoretical and practical debates within the field of international political economy (IPE). The module begins with an examination of the key theoretical perspectives in IPE, before proceeding to apply these various theoretical perspectives to a series of issue-specific case studies, including hegemony, finance/ states and globalisation, and economic development. Note too that the unit focuses on these topics in historical context.
Objectives
This module aims to provide an advanced level of understanding of theoretical approaches in international political economy. By the end of the module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the historical context within which both international relations and international political economy emerged.
- Apply theories of international political economy to various contemporary issues and events, reflecting upon the nature of theorising within this field, and utilising appropriate theoretical frameworks within which to undertake empirical work in other modules.
- Demonstrate appropriate cognitive, communicative and transferable skills, including the ability to evaluate advanced concepts and theories, to present reasoned and effective arguments in written and oral form, to pursue independent learning and to show critical judgement.
