Matthew Flinders has been awarded the W.J.Mackenzie Prize by the Political Studies Association for the best book published in Political Science in 2008. This is the fifth time in the past seven years that scholars at the Department of Politics have won this award.

Dr Garrett Brown has received a Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. The award is given in recognition of excellence in teaching, enhancement of students' learning experience, encouragement of and promotion of good practice and raising the status of teaching and learning as a scholarly activity. This is the third such award won by members of the Department over the past two years.

Andrew Geddes and Alex Balch publish GLA Report

Professor Andrew Geddes and ESRC post-doctoral fellow Dr Alex Balch, with Dr Sam Scott (Dept of Geography, University of Liverpool), have published their 2009 evaluation of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority. The report evaluates the GLA's effectiveness, analyses temporary, casual and agency work and associated issues such as worker exploitation and use of migrant labour.

Dave Richards has been appointed special advisor

Dr David Richards has been appointed as the Special Adviser on a forthcoming House of Lords Constitution Committee Inquiry into the role of the Cabinet Office. The Inquiry will meet between April-July2009 to consider aspects of the work of the Cabinet Office, including the evolving role of the Cabinet Secretary and the extent to which the changes in the role of the Cabinet Office have led to any change in its constitutional position at the `centre of government´.

Dr Matt Sleat has been awarded £11,340 from the White Rose Consortium to fund a joint research project with political philosophers from the Universities of York and Leeds entitled ‘Liberal Realism: Political Theory in an Age of Insecurity’.

RAE 2008

RAE 2008 ranks the Department No.1 in the UK

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirm the Department's status as a world class centre for the study of politics. The assessment ranked the department first equal for overall performance amongst all politics departments in the UK, with 75% of research graded in the top 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) categories.

Grand Opening of our new Graduate School

Professor Robert Keohane, the eminent American political scientist and theorist of international institutionalism, opened our new Graduate School on Wednesday 22 October, 2008
