Our degrees

Your degree will provide a deep understanding of both the fundamental aspects and topics at the forefront of your chosen subject. Most degrees can be taken as a three year BSc or a four year MPhys. The latter is particularly relevant if you plan to work in a related industry or continue to a PhD, but also if you wish to extend your knowledge of our fascinating subjects further. All our main degrees are accredited by the UK Institute of Physics.

You will be taught by all our academics, from up-and-coming lecturers through to internationally acclaimed professors. All staff are engaged in cutting edge research, working in fields which include Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Polymer and Biophysics, Semiconductor Nanotechnology and Medical Physics. Our experience and passion for research enhances your learning experience via optional modules, final year projects and visits to major research facilities including CERN and the Canary Islands Observatory.

Careers

A degree in Physics shows an employer that you have analytical and mathematical skills, are a logical thinker, a problem solver, and someone who can understand and communicate complex and often abstract ideas. It´s therefore no wonder that Physics graduates are in demand from a wide range of employers. A survey of our 2008 graduates showed that, 6 months after graduation, 83% of students who responded were in work or further study. Some of these students had gone on to study for a PhD or MSc. Others are working as physicists in industry, or have gone on to use their skills in other areas such as teaching, accountancy and IT. Recent employers of our graduates include Laser Quantum, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and CGGVeritas (geophysical surveys) and HSBC.

Links with industry

The Department has very strong links with industry. Examples in recent years include: Hitachi and Toshiba research labs (electronic and electro-optical systems and components), CORUS (steel making), Aether Photonics (far infra-red lasers), Unilever and Dow Chemicals (polymers).

The International Office

The International Office at the University is here to help you with all aspects of your application to Sheffield and has designated country teams to provide a comprehensive "one stop" service to international students. We offer advice for you and your parents on all aspects of study in Sheffield including courses, tuition fees, scholarships, applying to study with us, and information about living in Sheffield. We regularly travel overseas to meet and advise students interested in studying with us, and we hope you will be able to join us at one of the events.
