Display screen equipment

By law, all University employees who make substantial use of some form of Display Screen Equipment (e.g. a personal computer) as part of their duties are protected by these regulations and are known as `users´.

This Department´s definition of a `user´ is an employee who uses Display Screen Equipment (DSE) for more than 2 hours per day during a typical week or uses DSE intensively from time to time for a sum total of at least 20% of their working year. People who consider they fall within this definition should make themselves known to the Department´s trainers and assessors (see below).

`Users´ are offered training, and are informed during training that they have entitlement to free eye tests to be carried out in the first instance by the University´s Occupational Health Nurse.

Workstations (that is the Display Screen Equipment and any other associated equipment, furniture and its surrounding environment) used by `users´ will also be assessed for suitability. Such assessment should be performed when an individual is first identified as a `user´ and at any time there is a significant change to the workstation(s) they use.

`Users´ should inform the Department´s assessors (see below) when any work changes occur or if any health problems develop which they believe may be linked to their use of DSE.

This Department´s appointed trainers and assessors are presently Richard Webb (room E30, phone 24275) and Paul Kerry (room D16, phone 23551).
