Annual Women in the History of Philosophy Lecture

Women make up only a minority of philosophers, and an even smaller minority in the history of the profession. One can easily get the impression that women's contributions to philosophy are only a recent phenomenon. But this is not true. The Sheffield Philosophy Department sponsors an annual lecture to increase awareness of the work of women in the history of philosophy.

2013 Lecture

Emily Thomas (Cambridge) will present 'The Metaphysics of Catherine Cockburn'.  21 February, 5pm, Arts Tower Lecture Theatre 4.  There will be free refreshments and a meal afterwards.  Contact Jenny Saul if you'd like to come to the meal.

Abstract:  The 18th-century philosopher Catherine Cockburn is best known as a moral philosopher and playwright.  However, she is also a metaphysician, and her remarkable ontology of space will be the focus here.  Cockburn gives an original defence of 'substantivalism', the view that space is an irreducible, concrete being independent of its contents.
