
Sheffield has one of the leading Philosophy departments in the country; the Department got the joint 3rd highest average score in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and it was awarded 24/24 in the government's Teaching Quality Assessment. The Department is particularly renowned for its vibrant and successful graduate community. Our courses include Masters degrees in Philosophy, Cognitive Studies and Political Theory; and the unusually wide range of PhD opportunities which we offer reflects the exceptionally broad range of research interests present among our academics.
The DepartmentThe range of philosophical expertise present in Sheffield is second to none: we have philosophers working in all of the main traditional areas of philosophy, as well as in exciting and more recent areas of intellectual concern such as feminism and the philosophy of film. Our coursesThe Department offers postgraduate degrees in Philosophy, Cognitive Studies, and Political Theory, as well as PhDs. We have around 50 postgraduate students, who are involved in a wide variety of seminars, workshops and conferences, informal reading groups and other activities. Our graduates have been notably successful on the job market. We also have a thriving international contingent, with current or recent students from Brazil, Greece, Germany, Iran, Switzerland, Spain, the USA, Australia, China, Ireland and Italy.
