PHI131 - Critical Thinking

Outline:

Distinguishing good arguments from apparently persuasive yet bad ones is an important skill for just about any pursuit, but especially vital to philosophy. Students in this module will learn how to extract an argument from a complex text, how to uncover hidden assumptions, and how to recognise and critique bad reasoning. In addition, students will learn how to argue well for their own viewpoints. As a part of learning these skills, students will be introduced to a bit of formal logic. This will be helpful for the skills taught in this module, but will also serve students wellin the rest of their philosophy degree, as readings will often assume some knowledge of formalism.
